The “Szczecin_offshore 2025” project is an integral part of the broader “Zachodniopomorskie_Offshore 2027” program initiated by the local government. The goal of the program is to maximize West Pomerania’s participation in the development of Polish wind farms.
The program is designed to strengthen regional offshore companies and promote them in new markets. It also addresses the challenges of EU climate policy.
The pursuit of climate neutrality drives the development of modern economic sectors at the expense of traditional ones. This shift is evident in European shipyards, which face increasing difficulty competing with Asian shipbuilders in traditional shipbuilding but hold a significant technological edge. Renewable energy in the marine environment presents a tremendous opportunity for the industry. EU plans aim for up to 440 GW from sea-based plants by 2025, a significant increase from the current few dozen GW. Poland’s offshore wind power construction program aims to build wind parks of several GW by 2040.
The plan for developing the offshore wind sector in the Western Pomerania Province spans 2021-2027, with an outlook to continue until 2040. It encompasses various segments: offshore structures, vessels, transport and logistics, service and repair, offshore energy, materials, education, and R&D+I. The goal is to create a Western Pomerania offshore environment – a networked arrangement connecting local governments, Szczecin Metropolis Development Agency, business support institutions, universities, and companies interested in offshore wind industry.
